Black defends d5, usually with e6, and keeps a foothold in the center. The light-squared bishop can become the problem piece, which is why so many of the named lines (Tarrasch, Tartakower, Orthodox, Lasker) are about when that bishop gets out. This is the largest Queen's Gambit tree in the opening book.
