X-ray attack

An x-ray is a long-range attack through a piece. A queen, rook, or bishop looks through an enemy piece at a target beyond it, or defends a friendly piece through an enemy piece on the same line.

When the middle piece moves or is captured, the line opens. That is why an x-ray sets up a discovered idea on the next move.
