Swallow's tail mate is a queen mate of the same family as the dovetail. The queen checks from a square diagonally adjacent to the king, and the king's own pieces block the two side squares.

The queen has to be safe from capture. A friendly piece must defend it, or the king's neighborhood must already be full.
