Rook against a pawn
A rook against a pawn is usually a win for the rook if the rook can get in front of the pawn or attack it from the side before it promotes. It is a draw if the pawn is far advanced and the rook's king is too far away.
- The simplest win is to put the rook on the promotion file, in front of the pawn. The pawn cannot advance, and your king walks over.
- Checking from the side also works when your king is close enough to attack the pawn. The enemy king has to keep stepping in front of the pawn or away from the checks.
- If the pawn is on the seventh rank and your king is far, the rook may have to give itself up for the pawn. That is a draw.
- The line below puts the rook on the a-file in front of the passed pawn.
