Queen against a pawn

A queen against a pawn wins unless the pawn is on the seventh rank on the a, c, f, or h file and the enemy king sits in front of it. Those four files have a stalemate defense. On the b, d, e, and g files the queen wins even against a pawn on the seventh.

  1. Use checks to bring your king closer. The queen alone should not step in front of the pawn if the enemy king can then attack the queen with no escape.
  2. When your king arrives, the queen takes the pawn or forces the king away from it.
  3. Against a bishop pawn or a rook pawn on the seventh, be careful. The defending king in the corner can be stalemated if you check from the wrong square.
  4. The line below is a series of queen checks against a pawn on a2. It shows the checking distance. It stops before the white king arrives.
