The Philidor position
The Philidor position is a drawing rook ending for the defender. The enemy pawn is on the fifth rank or further back, and your rook stays on the sixth rank so the enemy king cannot come forward.
- Keep the rook on the rank in front of the pawn (the sixth rank when White's pawn is on the fifth). Checks are not needed yet. The rook simply stops the king.
- When the pawn advances to the sixth rank, take the rook to the far end of the board and check from behind along the file.
- Checks from behind hold the king. Do not let your king be driven away from the promotion square.
- In the line below, Black checks on the sixth rank, returns to the side, and after e6 goes behind the pawn. That is the defensive switch.
